Course Description:

Pursue an interdisciplinary approach to understanding Vietnamese history, with special emphasis on America's complex wartime involvement. Explore a wide variety of points of view on the major issues and controversies surrounding the U.S.-Vietnam War and its aftermath. Examine Vietnamese nation building, French colonization, the contradictory and unclear objectives of the United States, the post-World War II foreign policy that led the United States into Vietnam, the importance of cross-cultural differences in the study of Vietnamese-American relations, the domestic conflict in the United States versus the military battles in Vietnam, and the reasons for the outcome, with lessons and legacies of war. This course meets the general education requirement in Other World Civilizations.

Recommended: Previous study in American history, world history, or the social sciences.

New option: This course will be supplemented with a home page featuring Web resources. E-mail communication with your instructor will be strongly encouraged.

Note: May Term 2003 is the last term this course will be offered in print version. In future terms, it will be offered only online (243294).
